Pierre Barbette

Pierre Barbette († October 3, 1298 ) was Archbishop of Reims from 1274 .

Life

Pierre Barbette was a member of the Barbette family as the brother of Étienne Barbette (I.) and the uncle of Étienne Barbette (II.). As a younger son he entered the clergy and in 1274, after a clever intrigue, became Archbishop of Reims . In 1286 he crowned Philip IV King of France.

In 1297 he was one of the negotiators whom Philip IV sent to Rome to defend the king's cause against England and Flanders. Here he also took care of the canonization of Louis IX. which was pronounced in the same year.
