Pierre Groult

Pierre Groult (* 1895 in Lessines ; † April 11, 1968 in Leuven ) was a Belgian Romance and Hispanic scholar .

life and work

Groult studied Catholic theology at the Catholic University of Leuven and was ordained a priest in 1920. Then he studied Hispanic studies with Alphonse Bayot and received his doctorate with the work Les Mystiques des Pays-Bas et la littérature espagnole du XVIe siècle (Leuven 1927; Spanish: Los místicos de los Paises Bajos y la literatura espiritual española del siglo XVI , Madrid 1976). After a period of teaching at the École Normale in Braine-le-Comte , he was from 1937 (as the successor to his teacher) professor at the Catholic University of Leuven. There he founded the magazine Les lettres romanes in 1947 and in 1951 the "Centro de Estudios hispánicos".
