Pierre Pica (born January 5, 1951 in Nice ) is a French linguist and research assistant (Chargé de Recherche) at the CNRS (Center National de Recherche Scientifique) in Paris. His specialty is theoretical linguistics and in particular the comparison of syntax.

Life

Pica has focused his research on the concept of parameters in linguistics. He also showed that the respective properties of the reflexive pronouns are derived from their morphological property. He is currently studying the distinction between the internal and external aspects of the Faculty of Linguistics and is also working on a fine-grained distinction between competence and performance. Over the past decade, Pica has intensified its work on Munduruku (an indigenous language in Para, Brazil). In collaboration with Stanislas Dehaene and Elizabeth Spelke, he developed a study on numerical expressions and counting in Munduruku. This study underscores the importance of these data for examining the interaction of language ability and preverbal 'core knowledge'. This research is in contrast to the hypothesis related to the Sapir and Whorf-derived relativism, which tends to reduce knowledge and culture, in part, to a small set of universal principles and intuitions. The research has resulted in a number of publications in the journal Science.
