Ludwig Georg Christel Kittel (born November 19, 1869 in Dornum ; † August 6, 1946 there ) was a German landscape painter from East Frisia.

Life

Ludwig Kittel was the second of seven children of the pharmacist Carl Adolf Kittel. After graduating from the Ulrich Gymnasium in Norden, he studied building and bridge construction at the Technical University of Hanover . Here he became a member of the Corps Slesvico-Holsatia in 1891 . In 1893 he continued his studies at the Technical University of Munich . At the same time, he attended courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1893 and 1894 . He then studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and after completing his studies returned to Dornum, where he gave drawing lessons at the private secondary school in Dornum and worked as a painter, especially as a landscape painter, and later as a writer until his death. During the First World War he served in the coastal artillery in Wilhelmshaven. After being promoted to lieutenant in August 1916, he took part in a deployment of Marine Corps I in Belgium.

Figurative and agricultural drawing were part of his profession. He took many of his motifs from his East Frisian homeland. His style was shaped by naturalism around 1900. He described his sailing trips to various Dutch ports in a logbook that he illustrated. From 1914 to 1941 he created the illustrations in Ostfreesland published by Heinrich Soltau . Calendar for everyone . In some cases he also wrote his own illustrated texts for this calendar, which testify to his detailed knowledge of the life of the East Frisian population. Due to the war, he was no longer able to illustrate a new edition of an East Frisian dictionary planned by the German Academy in Munich in 1943 .
