Pignolata

Pignolata is a sweet dish in the form of a layered dessert from Sicily .

The pignolata is mainly produced in eastern Sicily, but is also known on the neighboring mainland at the southern tip of Italy, in Calabria . In Sicily it is typical of Messina . The pignolata is often prepared and consumed at Christmas .

preparation

A dough is kneaded from flour and eggs and shaped into small balls or small rolls. These pieces of dough are fried in fat and stacked in a pyramid. Half of the pyramid is covered with chocolate and half with powdered sugar . In another variant, caramelized sugar is mixed with aromas, for example lemon aroma, and poured over the pyramid.
