Pile gate

The Pile Gate is a city gate in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik , which is located on the western side of the old town in the Pile district of the same name, which used to be economically important . It was built in 1460 on the site of an earlier gate. It is a complex of well-fortified gates and bridges that lead over a deep moat; in addition, the gate was protected by the Bokar fortress . The current appearance of the gate dates back to 1537, when the outer gate was redesigned with a fortress-like semi-circular tower.

A stone bridge and a wooden drawbridge, which used to be closed every evening, lead to the Pile Gate, which consists of an inner and an outer gate. The first stone bridge with only one arch was built in 1397 and replaced by a new one with three arches in 1471 (designed by Paskoje Miličević), although one arch was destroyed after 1533. The first gate, built in 1397, served as a template for the Ploče Gate , built between 1449 and 1450 .
