The Ploče Gate

The Ploče Gate [ ˈplɔtʃɛ Gate ] in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik was after the Pile Gate the second main entrance gate into the old town of Dubrovnik, which was enclosed by the city wall .

The Ploče Gate, formerly called "St. Luka Gate" after a nearby church, was built in 1450 by Simeon della Cava in its current appearance . The trade routes used by the caravans from the Orient ended in this gate. Both the design of the two inner gates and the bridges (built 1449–1450) are reminiscent of the Pile Gate in the west of the old town, which served as a model. In addition to the Pile Gate, the Ploče Gate was one of the two main entrances to the old town. In the 19th century the gate was enlarged and made wider. The outer gate was built by Mihajlo Hranjac in 1628.

The mighty Revelin fortress, built in 1462 in the northeast of the city, protected this entrance gate into the old town . It was connected to the Ploče Gate by a bridge.
