Pilot Car in California

A pilot car is an escort vehicle that is used in the USA and Canada to secure the single-lane through traffic at a road construction site .

Instead of construction site traffic lights in the United States, there are often long construction sites with the traffic rule that they can only be passed under the guidance of a pilot car. This drives ahead on the approved route, all vehicles must follow the pilot car. Since the construction sites there are very confusing and sometimes only lead to sand or gravel without a road surface , there is a risk of serious damage to the vehicles. Failure to comply often results in very high fines.

Pilot cars are also used as support vehicles for heavy haulage. The individual states each have their own regulations.
