Pinguecula

As pinguecula (lat. Pinguis = bold, macula = spot, w, plural "pingueculae" even Pingueculum , n, plural "pinguecula") is known in the ophthalmology a very common, harmless degeneration of the conjunctiva , as flat raised, white yellowish The spot in the fissure of the eyelid is usually first visible nasally at the corneal edge.

Pingueculae are usually present on both sides, but can be asymmetrical. Histologically , an impoverished mucosal epithelium and underlying fragments of collagen fibers and shapeless material are found.

In pronounced cases, pingueculae several millimeters wide can be present both nasal and temporal of the cornea, protruding more than a millimeter and the surface of which is covered with calcifications. Then they can also cause symptoms such as a foreign body sensation and reddened eyes.

In addition to heredity, the cause of development is believed to be the influence of UV radiation from the sun, since pingueculae, like pterygias , seem to occur more frequently in people who are exposed to intense sunlight.

Pingueculae are not treated. The disruption of the tear film is alleviated with viscous tear substitutes. In severe cases, surgical removal is conceivable.
