Pinna pedal reflex

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pinna-Pedal-Reflex is a veterinary diagnostic procedure, which is mainly used in small animal dermatology . It is performed either by rubbing the tip of one ear at the base of the auricle for five seconds or by scratching the edge of the auricle with your fingers. An animal reacts positively when it makes scratching movements with its hind leg on the same side.

The pinna pedal reflex is an indicator of itching . It has a sensitivity of 82% and a specificity of 94% for sarcoptic mange in dogs , even if the auricle is not affected by the disease. False positive results occur with allergies, especially with atopic dermatitis .
