Pintsch oil

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pintsch oil AG was until 1984 one of the largest waste oil processing plants in the Federal Republic of Germany. Around 20 percent of the German waste oil ended up in their refineries in Hanau , West Berlin and Leverkusen . The operation was subsidized from the so-called Altölpfennig by the Federal Office for Commercial Economics . In order to save costs, official requirements were disregarded, and illegal toxic fumes and liquids were continuously released.

As early as 1974, when the wind accidentally drove the poisonous plumes from the Hanau plant into a housing estate, the first criminal proceedings were initiated and the proceedings against the managing director were discontinued because of "insignificance". There were further proceedings, in 1981 a citizens' initiative was founded in Hanau. In West Berlin in 1981, the relocation of the premises resulted in renovation costs of 10 million marks. But it was not until 1984 that the Hanau company premises were searched. Shortly after the operation was shut down at all sites, the company went on 30 April 1984 in bankruptcy .

After that, the used oil sludge had to be disposed of on the company premises at the taxpayer's expense. For West Berlin alone, the cost of dredging and decontaminating the completely oil-contaminated soil to a depth of two meters was estimated at 50 million marks. For this purpose, a floor washing system was built on the former company premises on Gradestrasse in Berlin-Britz , which, once the work has been completed, will also be used for contaminated soils transported from elsewhere.

The renovation of the Pintsch oil site in Hanau from 1987 onwards required considerable expenditure on occupational safety and emission protection. The excavation of the soil had to be carried out inside an enclosure with a remote-controlled excavator. The total costs for the project were around 103 million DM (52.7 million euros). Rehabilitation methods were developed and tested in practice, which are now used far beyond Hessen.
