Pioneer Natural Resources is a Texan oil company. Pioneer Natural Resources owns interests in the Spraberry oil field in Texas.

The present company Pioneer Natural Resources was created in 1997 through a merger of the oil company Parker & Parsley Petroleum Company and MESA, Inc . Parker & Parsley was founded in 1962 by Howard Parker and Joe Parsley, who until recently limited themselves to oil production in Texas and refrained from expanding their business internationally. Mesa Petroleum was founded in 1956 by T. Boone Pickens , who tried to take over his former employer Phillips Petroleum and Unocal at times . In 1997, the heavily indebted MESA, Inc. merged with the larger company Parker & Parsley.
