The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is a division of the Department of Transportation of the United States ( Department of Transportation, DOT ) and the regulations for the safe, reliable and environmentally friendly operation commissioned the approximately 3.2 million km pipeline in the United States and to develop and enforce about 1 million transports of hazardous substances by land, sea or air every day .
organization
The PHMSA consists of two departments, the Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS), responsible for the pipelines, and the Office of Hazardous Materials Safety (OHMS), in which the transport of hazardous substances is managed. As part of these tasks, the PHMSA operates a fusion center for hazardous substances, the Hazardous Materials Fusion Center, HAZMATFC .
history
After the resignation of the incumbent director Cynthia L. Quarterman in September 2014 and ongoing criticism of the agency's performance by industry and environmental activists, the management of the agency was transferred to Marie Therese Dominguez in 2015 . Her nomination surprised both political observers and other stakeholders as she has no industrial experience with dangerous goods or pipelines.
