Pippin (name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pippin was the name of numerous important members of the Carolingian ruling family of the medieval Franconian Empire , who are therefore also known under the name Pippinids . In many genealogies, Pippin is also represented in the French spelling Pépin .

Origin (etymology)

The name Pippin is derived from a Frankish nickname pippinus for "little child". For this word there are again several etymological explanations: pippinus could "little child" to be derived from a Germanic root * bib - ( "move fluctuate" for "small, easily movable object". See double. Bibi "yours truly" ), from a child-language sound word for a small bird (derived from beeping) or from the Romance root, which is also the basis of today's French word pépin "core" (then a metaphor such as "as small as an apple core" would be assumed).
