Pitfirrane Castle

Pitfirrane Castle is a tower house in the Scottish village of Crossford in the Council Area Fife . In 1971, the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish list of monuments in the highest monument category A.

history

Pitfirrane Castle dates from the 15th century. In 1573, the Tower House passed to George Halkett , who had the battlements removed to increase the floor , the corner tourelles and a stair tower added, resulting in an L-shaped floor plan. The year 1583 can be found on a lintel . In the late 17th century, Charles Halkett had an L-shaped extension added on the east side. This was in a ruinous state in 1975 and was canceled. The stem in the inner corner, added by David Bryce in 1854 , was also lost during this measure. From Bryce, however, the flat servant wing on the north side with the round tower in front was preserved. In the later 19th and 20th centuries, Pitfirrane Castle was further redesigned. The Tower House has been the seat of the local golf club since 1953. In 1975 a low-rise building was added to the south side, which was made into a full L in 1980.
