route
The trails are not forest highways, but high alpine paths, partly glaciated and snow-covered. It is never clear what it looks like up on the Mittagskogeljoch at the beginning of August or how the glacier is to be climbed. For the athletes on the long distances P100, P85 and P42 Glacier, it goes up to 3,000 m above sea level. During the ascent to the pass of the Mittagskogel, which with its pyramidal shape represents the distinctive end of the Pitztal valley, and the subsequent crossing of the glacier, the wheat from the chaff is already separated in the field of participants. Another special feature of the route is the fact that all runners come back to the start and finish area in Mandarfen and can meet the spectators as well as their companions. For the athletes, the sections of the route with glacier crossing, lonely trails and mountain air at 3,000 m mean trail running at a very demanding level.
Routing of the different distances
All athletes start in Mandarfen at 1,675 m. The routes P100, P85 and P42 Glacier lead immediately to the 1,300 m ascent to the Joch des Mittagskogel at 3,050 m. The trail continues down to the Gletscherexpress, steeply down over the Mittelbergferner and after crossing the Mittelbergferner glacier on the "Notweg" to Mittelberg and back to Mandarfen. Here it goes on through the Hirschtal to the Rifflsee and over Plodersee and Fuldaer Höhenweg to the Taschachhaus and through the Taschachal back to Mandarfen. The participants of the P26 distance and the P15 sprinters follow the “long ones” on this section of the route. While the P26 runners run the entire route over the Riffl and Plodersee, Fuldaer Höhenweg and Taschachtal, the sprinters take a short cut at the Rifflsee and only run a section of the Fuldaer Höhenweg along the lake before they get down early and return to Mandarfen through the Taschachtal. After the other distances after these sections of the route have been reached, the P100 & P85 runners continue. After an ascent to the Kaunergrathütte at 2,817 m, it goes on the Pitztaler Almenweg to the Neubergalm, from where the downhill follows into the valley. Arrived in Mandarfen, the P85 participants have reached their destination, while the P100 athletes set off on their last loop, which leads them again up to the Rifflsee and then to the finish in Mandarfen.
The trail running competition took place for the first time in July 2013 as the Pitztal Glacier Trail Maniak . It was repeated in 2014. In July 2015, the event was relaunched as the Pitz Alpine Glacier Trail with a modified route and two additional distances (P85 & P26).
