PixelPlus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PixelPlus is a collective term for several image enhancement methods developed by Philips for 100 Hz CRT televisions, later expanded to include image enhancement for flat screen televisions.

With intelligent digital signal processing, the problem of overlapping lines that arises when the frame rate is doubled (100 Hz television) is processed using the interlacing method ; with high-resolution televisions, PixelPlus also optimizes the upscaling of low-resolution television images (conventional PAL resolution) for display on HDTV -Flat screen.

PixelPlus is therefore used both in 100 Hz televisions and in progressive scan- enabled devices.

In standard PAL devices, the number of pixels is 768 with 576 lines in 4: 3 and 1024 with 576 lines in 16: 9 (assuming square pixels). This process doubles the horizontal resolution from 1024 to 2048 pixels.

disadvantage

With the introduction of "100 Hz" televisions, the television lost a television functionality for natural deinterlacing by the human eye due to intermediate storage and double writing of fields . For a trouble-free 100 Hz image reproduction, intelligent image processors were therefore necessary to avoid line flickering and disruptive comb effects. The introduction of flat panel televisions created another problem. These have a single native image resolution. The intelligent image processor must calculate the image content in such a way that the lower resolution and blurring are not noticeable. With difficult picture content, e.g. B. fast diagonal movements or moving moiré patterns (running zebra or herringbone jacket) the image processor fails more often. Conversely, there are also problems with a higher resolution of the transmitted signal than the native resolution of the device. The greater the difference between native and calculated image resolution, the more the HDTV quality is falsified and reduced. No additional details are displayed either, only existing ones are interpolated .
