Pixelio.de is an image database that in December 2012 contained over 448,000 images in 236 categories, which by January 2011 had been downloaded 13.9 million times.
Users must first register and log in before downloading or uploading photos. Research in the hierarchically arranged categories can be carried out anonymously.
The images uploaded to the server are activated by administrators if the resolution is approx. 2 million pixels (at least 1000 pixels side length) and the quality meets the requirements of pixelio. The motif must also fit into an image database.
The use of the images is permitted for "editorial" purposes in accordance with the specified license conditions and is not fundamentally free of charge; if the image is used, reference must be made to Pixelio and the photographer. Changes to the images beyond typical image processing are not permitted. Use in picture catalogs or so-called merchandising is also excluded.
A lively community of active photographers has now developed on Pixelio , who rate the photos and discuss them.
At the end of March 2007 the image database was renamed from Pixelquelle to Pixelio for legal reasons .
