Plone is a web content management system written in the Python programming language . Version 1 appeared in 2003. It can be used for intranet and extranet applications, as a document publishing system and as a groupware tool over long distances. Numerous extensions enable use for all conceivable application server tasks: B. in e-learning , as a web shop or as a photo album .

It is built on the open source application server Zope and its related content management framework , which is supported by thousands of developers around the world. Plone is considered to be the most successful project based on Zope. With Plone, using the Archetypes framework, you can easily develop your own web applications (including UML -based using ArchGenXML ).

Plone supports various WYSIWYG editors, the free editor Kupu has been included since release 2.1 . TinyMCE has replaced Kupu as the standard editor since Plone 4. Content can be released via workflows, whereby the visibility and various authorizations of the content objects can be defined in the various states. The Plone interface is multilingual, and the LinguaPlone add-on product can also be used to manage multilingual content.

The Plone Collective is a collection of additional products for free use on Plone sites. For the most part , it contains applications that have already been implemented numerous times on other platforms , such as B. a forum , a weblog or a newsletter .
