Platypus theater

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Platypus Theater is a Berlin- based independent author's theater that develops, produces and plays English-language and bilingual theater plays for children and young people. (Platypus is the English name for the platypus .)

Beginnings

The Platypus Theater was founded in 1985 by the Australian Peter Scollin and his wife Anja Scollin. The first piece was “The Clown in the Land of Kangaroos” in German for children aged three and over.

English-language children's and youth theater

In 1992 the first English-language youth theater play "Teenagers in Trouble" was produced by the Platypus Theater. Since then, the focus has been on the development and production of English-language and bilingual pieces. Platypus works with a solid base of writers, actors and collaborators from England, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. The primary goal is to make good and intelligent theater for young people and to build on their world of experience. English as a foreign language can be sensed and understood in the theatrical space. Preparatory material for the lessons is available for all pieces. For most of its productions, the Platypus Theater receives support from the Governing Mayor of Berlin - Senate Chancellery - Cultural Affairs. With around 130 performances, Platypus reaches around 20,000 spectators annually.

Workshops and theater education

Theater-educational projects of various kinds are part of the regular offer of the Platypus Theater. Since 2008 there has also been a partnership with the TUSCH Berlin initiative (theater and school).

Performance locations

The Platypus Theater does not have its own venue, but rather plays at various theaters and cultural centers in Berlin, e.g. B. in the BKA theater on Mehringdamm or in the ufaFabrik in Tempelhof . The pieces are mainly attended by school classes, some are also performed on the move in schools. There have already been guest appearances and tours in Germany, Italy and Australia.
