Plaza de Toros, Zaragoza

The Plaza de Toros in the Aragonese provincial capital Saragossa is the second oldest bullring in Spain . However, it was rebuilt repeatedly in the 19th and 20th centuries, so that its original appearance is no longer known.

history

Ramón Pignatelli, the head of the city's hospital and death center (Real Casa de Misericordia) and a major canal construction project (Canal Imperial de Aragón) commissioned the construction of a stone bullring in 1764 to finance the hospice. It is not known whether he himself and / or his architect knew the older arena of Béjar in the province of Salamanca . After a construction period of only 70 days (others speak of 6 months), the arena was inaugurated on October 8, 1764. The original system was later repaired and modernized several times. The last major renovations took place in 1916 and 2002: As part of the former, the facade was completely redesigned and the number of spectator seats increased; in the course of the latter, this was reduced from around 14,300 to around 10,000.

architecture

The dimensions of the original building made of broken stone and bricks as well as numerous wooden beams are unknown; today's arena has an inside diameter of 48 m and an outside diameter of about 100 m. The entire arena can be completely covered by a canvas roof made of Teflon silk .
