Connecting rod ratio

The connecting rod ratio describes a design feature in reciprocating piston engines that affects the piston movement.

It is defined as the ratio between the crank radius and the length of the connecting rod . The quotient for common car engines is between 0.28 and 0.33. With diesel engines , the quotient is usually lower than with comparable gasoline engines . The higher the connecting rod ratio, the greater the piston side forces . A lower ratio leads to an increasing overall height of the engine with the same piston stroke.
