PluX

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PluX is a standardized plug interface between an electronic assembly (e.g. digital decoder) and a model railway vehicle and is used for the safe and quick installation and exchange of such assemblies.

The PluX interface has been defined by the NMRA as part of NMRA RP-9.1.1 since 2008 and by MOROP in NEM 658. Both documents have the status of a recommendation. These documents describe the pin assignment, dimensions of the connector and the space required for the module.

There are four different expansion stages of the PluX interface:

  • PluX8: 2 × 4 pins; for engine and driving light
  • PluX12: 2 × 6 pins; like PluX8, plus loudspeaker, tail lights
  • PluX16: 2 × 8 pins; like PluX12, plus SUSI train bus, connection for storage capacitor
  • PluX22: 2 × 11 pins; like PluX16, plus another four outputs for special functions, one SUSI output and input

PluX12 is only defined in NEM 658, but not in NMRA RP-9.1.1.

compatibility

The different expansion stages of the PluX interface are compatible with each other. For example, in a locomotive equipped with a PluX22 slot, PluX22, PluX16, PluX12 or PluX8 decoders can be used, and a PluX22 decoder can be used in locomotives with PluX22, PluX16, PluX12 and PluX8 -Sockets can be used if there is enough space. When using different expansion levels for the slot and decoder, only the function of the respective smaller expansion level is possible.

In vehicles with a PluX interface, decoders with a 6-pin interface according to NEM 651 standards can also be used.

Emergence

Since around 1999, working groups of the NMRA have been discussing a new connector definition that has more than the 6 (NEM 651) or 8 (NEM 652) connections.

At the beginning of 2005, Märklin, with the support of Electronic Solutions Ulm, presented a 21-pin interface for AC motors, based on a 22-pin industrial connector in a 1.27 mm grid (arranged in 2 rows). Many suggestions for improvement were made during the presentation. It was agreed to revise the interface and to wait with the use of it. Without a standard for the 21-pin interface having been published, some manufacturers began to use it in accordance with the Märklin proposal.

In April 2005, the NMRA DCC Working Group dealt with the 21-pin interface introduced by Märklin for the first time in a meeting hosted by Fleischmann . It was decided to commission a small team to document the interface for the NMRA recommendation RP 9.1.1 (and not to develop it, because it was already on the market).

In March 2006, the NMRA DCC Working Group decided in a meeting hosted by Märklin not to include the 21-pin Märklin interface already on the market in the NMRA recommendations until there is also a DC version of this interface.

In the same NMRA meeting, a new topic was defined (topic 0603242, 22 pin connector), with AJ Ireland from Digitrax as the topic editor . The PluX interface was created from this topic.

In January 2008, a new version of the NMRA recommendation RP-9.1.1 was adopted, which includes the (now slightly changed) 21-pin AC interface as 21MTC and the 22-pin DC interface in various expansion stages as PluX8 / 16/22 defined.

In 2008, the MOROP passed the first edition of NEM 658, which described the PluX8 / 16/22 interfaces according to the NMRA recommendation RP-9.1.1 and added PluX12.

The first decoders and locomotives appeared at the end of 2008.

The current (2013) newest versions are the 2012 edition of NEM 658 and the 2012 edition of NMRA RP-9.1.1.
