Podium (dolmen)

Dolmen M XII by Petit-Chasseur with triangular podium (gray)

The podium or pedestal is made of stones, rarely more than 0.7 m high, sometimes very long elevation around a Neolithic dolmen , which was covered with polygonal slabs and can be found in France and Switzerland .

In the case of the Aillevans- type dolmens , the podium is rectangular or trapezoidal. The Auvernier Allée couverte may be of this type. In the case of the Petit-Chasseur dolmens , the podium is triangular. Both types of systems are to be combined with the Horgen culture . In dolmens in the south of France (as in Ronc Traoucat ), the transition from the older tumulus to the younger podium or pedestal can be seen. Some dolmens, such as the Aillevans and Brévilliers dolmens, were originally located in round hills and have been converted into podium dolmen.
