The Podlaskie Opera and Philharmonic - European Center of Art ( Polish Opera i Filharmonia Podlaska - Europejskie Centrum Sztuki ) is the most important cultural institution of Podlaskie , the north-eastern part of Poland. The center opened on September 28, 2012.

history

The multifunctional building provides space for several theater and music ensembles, including the State Symphonic Orchestra founded in 1954. The sphere of activity extends beyond Podlachia and includes neighboring voivodships and also western areas of Belarus .

The center is located in Białystok , 1 Odeska Street, within a park.

Before the opening of the Podlaskie Opera and Philharmonic, there were relatively few cultural institutions in Białystok. Although there was the Aleksander Węgierko Theater and the Białystok Puppet Theater, the symphony orchestra and other musical ensembles performed in the Węgierko Theater and the Gościnny Palace. In 1974 the symphony orchestra was given a new building with a concert hall at Podleśna Street 2, next to the music school, on the edge of a large park and was renamed the Philharmonic. This building has 447 seats.

On October 25, 2004, the Podlaskie Voivodeship adopted the decision to build the European Art Center. The area next to the puppet theater was chosen. At the beginning of 2005, an international architecture competition was announced. Of the 14 projects submitted, the work of Professor Marek Budzyński (* 1939) from Warsaw was chosen. The foundation stone was laid on April 22, 2006 and the finished building was inaugurated on September 28, 2012.

There are two auditoriums in the building: the Great Hall and the Kammerspielsaal. On the Odeska Street side is the main facade, designed in the form of a huge colonnade. The building is dominated by the windowless cord floor. The flat roof is designed as a viewing terrace accessible to the public, with a view of the city panorama. The Great Hall has 771 seats and can be expanded up to 1000 seats. The space is eighteen thousand cubic meters. The scene portal is sixteen meters wide. The stage podium is equipped with four sunken platforms, and the orchestra pit can also be lowered. The revolving stage is located in the rear adjoining room, and two 3 × 14 m stage wagons in the side rooms. Glass sound mirrors are suspended above the auditorium, allowing the acoustics to be changed. A dismountable bell shell is provided for concerts. The great hall is equipped with a modern organ. The open amphitheater has around 650 seats.

The Podlaskie Opera and Philharmonic has the following music ensembles:

  • Symphonic Orchestra of the Podlaskie Opera and Philharmonic (founded 1954)
