Polar snow (also diamond snow , diamond dust ; English diamond dust ) is a form of precipitation in which ice needles are formed by resublimation directly from the water vapor in the air layers close to the ground and fall to the ground. The sky can be completely cloudless. Since the air close to the ground contains innumerable small ice needles under polar snow conditions, halos with many variants can be created, provided a suitable light source (sun, moon, but also artificial light sources) is available. Polar snow usually occurs during severe frost with double-digit minus degrees.
