Poligeenan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poligeenan (synonym degraded carrageenan , dCGN) is a partially hydrolysed carrageenan from red algae of the family Rhodophyceae .

properties

Poligeenan (CAS No. 53973-98-1) is a mixture of polysaccharides of different lengths, which are of low viscosity in aqueous solutions and have a high number of sulfate groups that act as chelators . The degraded k-carrageenan contained in it has cytotoxic effects, whereas the undegraded one does not. The degraded carrageenan of about 40 kDa is more toxic than that of 10 kDa. Poligeenan is as a possible carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic to humans) classified the stage 2B.

Manufacturing

Poligeenan is produced from carrageenan, a sulfated polygalactan , by acid hydrolysis for up to six hours at a pH value of one and temperatures of around 90 ° C. The hydrolysis is carried out up to an average molecular weight of 10 to 20 kDa .

application

Poligeenan is used as a viscous chelator for barium sulfate suspensions, which are used for X-ray diagnostics of the swallowing process. The viscosity makes it easier to swallow the suspension and delays the precipitation of the barium sulfate particles from the suspension.
