Polyp (from Latin polypus from ancient Greek πολύπους polýpous 'many feet' = 'polyp')

  • the sessile form of many cnidarians, see polyp (cnidarians)
  • Aristotle and some zoologists used cephalopods in the 19th century
    • In gastronomy, therefore, still today (as a polyp fish offered for consumption ) an octopus (eight feet ), but also cuttlefish and squids (ten feet)
  • in medicine a mostly benign tumor, see polyp (tumor)
  • Colloquially, but medically incorrect, an enlargement of the nasal polyps or the tonsils, see adenoids
