Ponta da Piedade
The Ponta da Piedade ( Portuguese tip of mercy ) is the tip of a steep headland ( cape ) that protrudes into the Atlantic , a 20 meter high rocky cliff landscape with hidden beaches and bays, two kilometers south / southwest of Lagos (Portugal) on the outskirts of Lagos in the Algarve . From there you can see Sagres in the west , and in the east you can see the entire bay of Lagos with the Meia Praia beach . It can be seen on foot from above or from the sea. From Lagos you can start about one hour boat tours to the rock walls, for example with a fishing boat. Some of the rock domes have the shape of animals named by the locals. You can take the boats between the rocks. There is also a slow train between the harbor and the viewpoint.
The Ponta da Piedade is one of the most beautiful sights in Portugal and the most beautiful rock formation in the Algarve. Above the rocks there is a lighthouse with a parking lot, you can look down on the caves and grottoes on the rock walls. The lighthouse is a destination that many hikers go to on the Algarve coast. Small paths lead past small caves and grottos, but in most cases it is too dangerous to enter. There is a sandy beach down at Ponta da Piedade.
A landscape of grottos with rock formations, tunnels, gates and boulders protruding into the sea formed on this stretch of coast. Since 2004 it has been possible to descend to these rocks via a steep staircase with almost 200 steps near the lighthouse. The Ponta da Piedade consists of red and yellow rock. The sea water flows through the caves and grottoes that have been washed out by the sea for thousands of years. The fishing boats for the sightseeing tours start in Lagos from the promenade on the shore. You can also start a tour directly at the Ponta da Piedade. A hiking trail leads from the lighthouse to the western beaches of Canavial and Praia do Porto de Mós , a larger sandy bay. Next to Praia do Porto de Mós (not to be confused with the place of the same name) is Praia do Canavial in the west of the cape. Praia do Camilo is halfway to Ponta da Piedade . The stretch of coast from Lagos to Ponta da Piedade is divided into several small bays. It is an advantage to go on a cave tour at low tide, otherwise only part of the caves can be visited.
