The Church of St. Mary of the Holy Rosary in Soltau , Lower Saxony, is the seat of a Catholic parish in the northern district of Heidekreis . The parish church bears the patronage of Mary from the point of view of the rosary and is located at Wiesenstrasse 7, the neighboring rectory at Feldstrasse 22. The parish also includes the subsidiary church of St. Ansgar  in Schneverdingen  and belongs to the Deanery Celle of the Diocese of Hildesheim .

history

In 1901 the chaplain of the castle chapel of the Kettenburg near Visselhövede ( see also Herz-Jesu-Kirche (Visselhövede) ) held the first Catholic masses in Soltau since the Reformation . In 1902 a so-called " mission station " was established, which on August 1, 1956, was promoted to a curate and on January 1, 1962 to a parish. Since November 1, 2006, the Church of St. Ansgar in Schneverdingen has also been part of the Soltau parish.

Church building

After the number of Catholics in Soltau had increased significantly in the years before the First World War due to the influx of workers and soldiers, the church building site was purchased in 1912. On 1 October 1914, the foundation stone was laid for the first church, and on 10 October 1915 was followed by its consecration .

Due to the influx of Catholic refugees and displaced persons after the Second World War , the parish grew strongly. It was therefore decided to build a new, larger building. From 1975 to 1976 a new church was built on the site of the old church that was demolished in 1975, when Georg Gedig (1926–2014) was the pastor of the Soltau parish. It was designed by the architect Wolfgang sealed deer joke from Braunschweig and was on March 20, 1976 consecrated . The neo-baroque bell tower of the previous church was preserved.

After three electronic organs had been used one after the other for church music since 1976 , a pipe organ was installed for the first time in 2017 . The instrument with 13 registers on two manual works was built in 1976 by GF Steinmeyer & Co. from Oettingen in Bavaria and was initially in the concert hall of the Windsbach Boys Choir in Middle Franconia before it was moved to Soltau.

Church life today

Today, ethnic repatriates from Poland and the former Soviet Union , community members of Italian and Croatian origin, former expellees and their descendants as well as immigrants from southern and western Germany are important groups within the community .
