Ponte Punta Penna Pizzone

The Ponte Punta Penna Pizzone of Taranto is a bridge that connects Punta Penna with Punta Pizzone at the point where a natural narrowing forms the two gullies of the Mar Piccolo . It was inaugurated in 1977, is 1909 meters long and 45 meters above sea level . It is therefore one of the longest bridges in Europe . It was realized in prestressed concrete according to the design of Ing.Giorgio Belloni and at that time cost almost 26 billion Lire for the actual bridge and 15 billion Lire for the construction of the access roads.

In the late 1960s, the construction of this bridge became necessary to handle the increasing traffic and the expansion of the city. It is an important bypass that connects the northern and southern parts of the city; especially during the opening procedures of the swing bridge Ponte Girevole to allow the passage of large military ships; because then Taranto is divided into two parts, so to speak.

The bridge was dedicated to the assassinated statesman Aldo Moro in 1978 .
