Ponzio reaction

In chemistry, the Ponzio reaction is a synthesis method for the preparation of 3-nitro- (2-dinitromethyl) -benzene 2 from the oxime 1 of 3-nitrobenzaldehyde . To do this, 1 is reacted with dinitrogen tetroxide :

The trinitro compound 2 is a TNT-like explosive. The reaction is named after its discoverer, the Italian chemist Giacomo Ponzio (1870-1945).
