The Popp Island is a small island in the Somov Sea . It lies in front of the Cook Ice Shelf on the Georg V coast and was photographed from the air by the US Navy during Operation Highjump in 1946/47 and by a Soviet Antarctic expedition in 1958 . The island is named after Hans-Christian Popp (1928–1960) from the Main Meteorological Observatory in Potsdam , who was killed in a fire on the Soviet Mirny station on the night of August 2nd to 3rd, 1960 .
