The Porta Romana is one of the preserved city gates of the Spanish city walls of Milan .

Today it stands in the middle of the Piazza Medaglie d'Oro in the southeast of the old town. A Porta Romana already existed in the Middle Ages. The current gate was built by Aurelio Trezzi in 1596 on the occasion of Margaret of Austria, the bride of Philip III of Spain, and remained the only monumental entrance to the city for about two centuries. This was a focal point of the warlike entanglements affecting the city, but it was also the site of other festive entry ceremonies.
