The Portenband , also Portenband , describes a brightly contrasting strip along the hull of sailing ships , which is at the level of the port ports . The gun ports are darkly set off from the port tape. Unarmed merchant ships occasionally had a porte band, which is provided with painted darker rectangles, which simulate gun ports and were intended to have a deterrent effect.
