Portico (long-term archiving)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Portico is a system for long-term archiving of digital objects of the US non-profit organization Ithaka that has existed since 2005 .

Similar systems for long-term archiving are LOCKSS and CLOCKSS (controlled LOCKSS), which is based on LOCKSS .

functionality

The archive managed by Portico stores copies of digital objects ( e-journals , e-books , databases ) on servers in the Portico production system in Princeton as well as redundantly on various geographically distributed backup systems. In March 2020 the archive contains more than 31,000 e-journals and over 1.1 million e-books. The more than 1,000 libraries that use and finance Portico and more than 600 publishers protect themselves with the help of Portico in the event that access to digital objects can no longer be guaranteed by the publisher. If a library no longer has access to a publisher's offer due to certain “trigger events”, Portico protection occurs automatically. The library has access to a copy of the respective digital offer, which is stored in the Portico archive. By March 2020, this case had already occurred 125 times and these 125 titles are now accessible via Portico.

Trigger events are included

  • the cessation of publishing activities,
  • stopping the publication of a title,
  • if "back issues" are no longer provided by the publisher,
  • and if a publishing platform is inaccessible for more than 90 days.

Portico uses (meta) data standards such as METS , MPEG-21 and OAIS .

Use in the DFG project NatHosting

Portico is used in combination with a Private LOCKSS-Network (PLN) in the DFG project NatHosting . Portico is primarily used for the offer of larger publishers, a private LOCKSS network for the "long tail" of smaller publishers that are particularly at risk of failure.
