Special post office in the Hotel Christkindlwirt

The Christkindl post office is a Christmas post office in the Steyr district of the same name . It is open every year from the Friday before the first Sunday in Advent until January 6th and stamps the letters that are sent through it with a special stamp .

history

The square in front of the post office in December 1953

The Austrian Post set up a special post office in the vicarage for the first time in 1950, at that time with only one person employed per hour and around 42,000 postmarked items. In the first year of operation, only domestic shipments were allowed to be processed; these were given a green special stamp, which is now a rarity. As early as 1951, it moved to the Gasthof zur Schöne Aussicht on the rocky promontory near the pilgrimage church (today: Christkindlwirt ). Since then, the special post office has also processed foreign mail.

Since 1965, in addition to the Christmas stamp , there has also been an Epiphany stamp , which is used from December 26th to January 6th.

Address and company

The following forms of delivery are used:

  • Mail can be posted directly at the post office. Like other mail items, these receive the postmark of the posting post office, in this case a hand stamp.
  • You can deliver items to be stamped in Christkindl in any Austrian post office. They are sent with an additional stamp "Via Postamt Christkindl" (routing slip) in an envelope or parcel, each receive a machine stamp and are forwarded to the actual delivery address

Swiss Post also issues special Christmas stamps. A similar delivery is also possible via the Post AG postcard app. When sending from abroad, forwarding takes place via an international reply coupon .

It is also possible to send letters directly to the Christkindl address . Many children do this for their Christmas wishes. These letters will be answered if a postage stamp or an international reply coupon is enclosed. The Christkindl letters to children are only given a machine stamp.

The address of the Austrian Christmas Post Office is:

Post Office Christkindl
Christkindlweg 6
A-4411 Christkindl
