The Postbank NV was a state financial institution in the Netherlands . It was founded in 1881 by the government as Rijkspostspaarbank (German: Reichspostsparbank). In 1986 the company was privatized and merged with the Postgirodienst under the name Postbank. In 1989 the NMB Postbank Groep was established . Another merger with the insurance company Nationale-Nederlanden led to the establishment of the ING Groep in 1990 . Before the merger, Postbank NV had around 7.5 million private customers and was one of the largest credit institutions in the Netherlands.

On May 16, 2007 the ING Group announced that the subsidiaries ING Bank and Postbank will in future only operate under one brand. The new organization started in February 2009 under the name ING and had an estimated 8.3 million residential customers.
