Access with a soul hole

The gallery grave of Guiry-en-Vexin (Allée couverte de Bois-Couturier) dates from the late Seine-Oise-Marne culture around 2000 BC. (A radiocarbon sample gave a date of 2028 ± 135 BC cal (calPal)).

It is one of the few gallery graves in which a closure has been proven.

Research history

The megalithic grave , discovered by a farmer in 1915 and excavated in the following years, was restored in 1973; it has been recognized as a monument historique since 1958 .

location

The gallery grave is located on a 132 m high elevation in the forest of Morval in the Flur Bois Couturier in the Val-d'Oise department , about 55 km northwest of Paris near the border between Île-de-France and Normandy .

construction

The chamber, built mainly from small limestone slabs as a dry stone wall, about 1.3 m high and rounded at the back, is about 8 m long and 2 m wide. It contained the remains of about 200 people. There were 39 ceramic shards lined with shell grit and 58 flint artifacts, including three cross cutters. The only access is a so-called soul hole in the large front panel. The worked stone weighing 158 kg that closed the hole is kept in the Musée archéologique du Val d'Oise in Guiry-en-Vexin. The rear part of the burial chamber is rounded.

One of the chamber's bearing stones is decorated with sculpted breasts and a necklace, a representation that also occurs in several other gallery graves.
