Mail robbery at the Sihlpost

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sihlpost, May 1992. The attack took place in the area below right. Today this area is part of Europa-Allee .

During the mail robbery at Sihlpost in Zurich , five masked and armed men robbed mail worth almost 14 million francs on February 8, 1994. While the later Fraumünster post robbery in 1997 (with a total offense of 53 million francs) was cleared up, the attack on the Sihlpost site is still unresolved.

Not to be confused with the postal robbery is the individual perpetrator, known as the “Sihlpost robber”, who stole two sacks of securities worth 35 million francs from the same post office on January 6, 1989. It was an employee of the post office.

Course of events and booty

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., the perpetrators broke into the Sihlpost area and stopped an electric vehicle belonging to the Swiss Post . They then forced the release of the key to open the trailer of the vehicle.

They drove to the exit gate on Kasernenstrasse, where they loaded the loot - 19 sacks with almost 14 million francs of valuables - cash, gold, securities and jewelry - into a getaway vehicle. The shipments should have been loaded onto an express train in the direction of Geneva at Zurich main station . The speedy and purposeful execution of the crime indicates that the perpetrators had considerable background knowledge.

While the securities and some of the jewelry were seized, the rest of the looted property has still disappeared.

Investigations

A few months after the crime, a fence from France offered jewelry and securities that belonged to the stolen property. He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. However, no involvement in the robbery could be proven. According to his statement, he found the stolen goods in a rubbish bag in District 5 . Despite the examination of the approximately 550 Sihlpost employees, no useful information could be found.

A useful description of the perpetrator could only be made by one person - it was the perpetrator who supervised the postal workers and who only said “molto pericoloso” (Italian for “very dangerous”). Experts came to the conclusion that the Swiss Post's security concept had failed, making it easy for the well-prepared perpetrators.

In 1996, a similar robbery occurred in Grandvaux VD . Again five masked and armed men were at work, who carried out the deed in a flash and also disappeared with an escape vehicle provided. This postal robbery is still unresolved. The Sihlpost robbery has been barred since 2009 .
