Postal key

The postal code or Z key is in Austria common master key with which the doors can be opened by larger houses.

There is a standardized key switch on the doorbell of the intercom system that activates the opening mechanism of the front door so that the post office , garbage disposal and fire brigade can open apartment buildings independently . The key required for this cannot be purchased and should only be accessible to authorized groups.

Since January 1, 2006, private deliverers must also have access to the mailboxes so that they can also officially use this key.

In addition, 2004 is the patent protection fell on this key, bringing everyone it from an authorized locksmith can have a copy made. This means that it can no longer be used exclusively by authorized groups.

As an alternative, electronic access systems with a chip card or key are possible. At the moment, however, three quarters of all Viennese houses can still be opened with the postal key.
