Postverket was the former postal organization in Sweden .

The organization had its beginning on February 20, 1636, when the Swedish Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna led the affairs of government for the still underage daughter Kristina of the fallen King Gustav II Adolf and on that day founded the state-organized public postal system in Sweden. He appointed Anders Wechel as the first postmaster and commissioned Oluff Jönsson to travel the country and promote the postal system. Farmers whose farms were on the postal routes and who received tax breaks in return were hired as messengers.

When the Queen took over her government business in 1645, she was called General Riksen's Postordning ( General Imperial Postal Order ), which was passed under the reign in 1643, “as an essential and useful work for us and the crown, for the imperial estates, subjects and residents”.

Postverket was originally a government agency but expanded into a utility company in the 1900s. In 1994 Postverket was converted into a state-owned company and changed its name to Posten AB .
