Poule

Poule is a French term for group and is used in various sports.

Four-poule

In pétanque , for example, at German championships and in the final round of the CEP-EuroCup , but also at other events in the first round, a four-poule is played according to the following rules. Intermediate rounds were also held in Poules at Pétanque World Championships until 2007 .

  • "A" against "B" and "C" against "D" play.
  • Then the winners play against the winners and the losers against the losers of the first game.
  • The team that has now won two games is the first place in the pool and the team that has lost two games is eliminated.
  • The two teams that have won a game each play a play-off game (" Barrage ").
  • The winner of the "Barrage" is the runner-up des Poules and the loser is also eliminated.
  • If the number of participants in the tournament cannot be divided by 4, one or more groups of three will be formed. One of the three teams receives a bye in the first round and faces the winner of the first round. The loser of the other game is automatically in the barrage.

Example:

  First round winner Barrage final

1  A. 9   G1  B. 7th
2  B. 13       G2  C. 13       GG  C. 8th
  GV  B. 12
    BG  A. 13
  VG  A. 13
3  C. 13   V1  A. 13
4th  D. 6th       V2  D. 10
loser

In the example, B and C win the first game and play in the winning game, C wins and goes straight to the final. B has to go to the barrage.

Like D, A loses the first game. A wins the losing game and plays in the barrage. D is fourth.

The barrage here is the repetition of the first preliminary round game, this time A. B wins, making it third. A wins the final.
