Power Stack is Motorola's implementation of the of Apple , IBM developed and Motorola (AIM alliance) reference platform for the then-new PowerPC - CPUs . The PowerStack consists of a compact black basic housing that contains a workstation computer with a 3.5 " floppy disk drive , CD-ROM drive , hard disk and multimedia capabilities. Expansion housings (e.g. for additional hard disks) can be stacked on the computer housing (stack = engl . for stacks).

PowerStacks were available in different versions. The first models were equipped with a PPC601 processor at 66 MHz and corresponded to the Prep standard. Later models with a PPC604e with up to 300 MHz deviate from this standard in that they contain OpenFirmware , but are still Prep and not CHRP compatible. Furthermore, a more common case was used for these models. These have slots for a 1.44 "floppy disk drive and three optical drives and are kept in a classic light color.

Powerstacks were delivered with IBM's AIX or Microsoft's Windows NT as the operating system. Linux has supported Powerstack PreP and CHRP variants since the mid-1990s.
