Power BI

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Power BI is a business analysis service from Microsoft . The aim is to provide interactive visualizations and business intelligence functions with an interface that is so simple that end users can create their own reports and dashboards .

overview

Power BI provides cloud-based business intelligence ( BI) services known as Power BI Services, along with a desktop-based interface known as Power BI Desktop. It offers data warehouse functions such as data preparation, data discovery and interactive dashboards.

In March 2016, Microsoft released an additional service called Power BI Embedded on its Azure cloud platform. A key differentiator of the product is the ability to load custom visualizations.

history

This application was originally designed by Thierry D'Hers and Amir Netz from the SQL Server Reporting Services team at Microsoft. In the summer of 2010 it was designed by Ron George and named Project Crescent. Project Crescent was originally bundled with the SQL Server codename Denali on July 11, 2011 and available for public download. Later renamed Power BI, it was introduced by Microsoft in September 2013 as Power BI for Office 365 . The first version of Power BI was based on the Microsoft Excel-based add-ins: Power Query, Power Pivot and Power View. Over time, Microsoft also added additional features such as Q&A, enterprise-level data connectivity, and security options through Power BI gateways.

Power BI was first released to the general public on July 24, 2015.

In February 2019, Gartner confirmed Microsoft in the "Magic Quadrant 2019 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platform" as a leader due to the capabilities of the Power BI platform. This was the 12th year in a row that Microsoft was recognized as a leader in this Magic Quadrant category (starting 3 years prior to the development of this tool).
