Powerbreak is a term from ice hockey and describes a short commercial break during the game. Since 2012 there has been a commercial break in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) in every third after 8 minutes of playing time.

origin

The origin of the power break is in the USA . There these breaks are common practice under the name Commercial Breaks. In the NHL there are three such commercials per third after 6, 10, and 14 minutes of play. Power breaks are now standard in all top leagues and international tournaments.

Introduction to the DEL

Since 2012 there have also been power breaks in the DEL. The introduction took place at the initiative of DEL and TV partner ServusTV . At first, the power breaks were only used in around 80 games that were broadcast live by ServusTV, before the majority of the 14 DEL clubs decided on the general introduction of power breaks in 2012.

Exceptions

The regular execution of a power break, for example in the DEL after 8 minutes of playing time in every third, can be prevented by the following game situations:

  1. An outnumbered situation
  2. A gate
  3. Illegal long-range shot ( icing )

If one of these scenarios occurs, the power break will be made up for if none of the above situations occurs after a later whistle.
