Poyraz (wind)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poyraz is the name of the northeast wind in Turkey . It largely determines the summer climate on the Black Sea . Since it blows in the same direction as the current on the Bosporus and in the Dardanelles, it made it impossible for the settlers from the Mediterranean to access the Black Sea for a long time. The name Poyraz is the Turkish form of the name of the Greek god Boreas . Boreas is also the god with the ice-cold breath who brought the cold over the land.

The Poyraz is a fresh to stormy wind and provides cooling in the hot summer time. For this reason it is popular - unlike southerly winds such as the Lodos , which are said to have effects similar to foehns . Lodos is the Turkish form of the name of Notos , a brother of Boreas. In the years when the Poyraz subsides around the end of November, the south wind reverses the ocean current from the north and plows the cold surface water down. The upheaval triggers a major natural disaster among the migratory fish, who cannot continue their migration and die en masse.
