Prämeta (Prämeta Gesellschaft für Präzisionsmetall- und Kunststofferzeugnisse mbH & Co KG) is a German manufacturer of fittings and medical products and at times was also a toy manufacturer of exclusive model cars that are still known and valued collectors' items.

history

Two tourniquets : "The gray tourniquet" and a model from another manufacturer

The Prämeta company was founded in 1946 by Ferdinand Freiherr von Soiron and his wife in Cologne . Initially, Prämeta was a sales company for hinges . Bicycle accessories were also part of the range for a short time. In 1948, the production of the "Cologne car models" by Prämeta began, which lasted until 1958.

Today’s “Medical Division” goes back to a doctor who was doctor Dr. Bumm invented tourniquet , the further developments of which have since been manufactured by Prämeta as "The gray stevedore" and later "The green stevedore" and sold worldwide; there were also other special medical products.

At the same time, the original hinge sales were expanded through in-house development and production, which led to the concealed hinges that are ubiquitous in furniture construction today . In today's “Fittings Division”, the company concentrates on the development and manufacture of object hinges and special hinges.

Since the arrival of the managing partner Heinz Drooff in 1973, the company founders have sold the majority of their shares to his family and other owners. His son Heiner Drooff followed him in 1990 as managing director and in 2000 bought back the shares in the company that were held by third parties; since then it has been in pure family ownership. In 2006 the company relocated its headquarters from Cologne to the neighboring Troisdorf .

Prämeta produced different car models using the injection molding process . The first was the VW 1200 “ Brezelkäfer ” (Kdf) in 1948. In 1953 the Mercedes 300 “Adenauer” came onto the market. It was probably the best-selling Prämeta model. The Mercedes was available in different colors. The models in bright nickel-plated design were the most popular . What the Prämeta toy cars had in common was their dignified design. The company advertised that an adult could stand on the cart without damaging it. Another special feature was a kind of preprogrammable driving loop that the car then carried out automatically. The winding key in the form of a traffic policeman in the pose of the letter “P”, which stands for Prämeta, was also typical.

In 1954, Prämeta produced the Jaguar XK 120 . The last model to arrive was the Opel Kapitän in 1955 . In 1958, Prämeta stopped manufacturing car models.
