Carbamoyl phosphate is the mixed anhydride of the phosphate ion and carbamic acid and plays a major role in various metabolic processes. It is an intermediate stage in the breakdown of nitrogen compounds in the urea cycle and serves as the starting substance for the biosynthesis of pyrimidines .
In the urea cycle , it is represented in the mitochondria in a complex reaction of hydrogen carbonates , ammonia and phosphates and ATP as an energy supplier. The enzyme carbamoyl phosphate synthetase I serves as a biocatalyst in the synthesis .
In the synthesis of pyrimidines, the synthesis takes place with the help of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase II in the cytosol , whereby glutamine plays a role as the starting material.
