As a precision flat steel is called a rod with a sharp, rectangular or square cross section in tool steel with finely machined, entkohlungsfreien longitudinal surfaces. In Germany it is standardized in DIN 59350. Precision flat steel is used as a semi-finished product in machine, tool, fixture and mold construction.
The advantages over flat steel include, among other things
- the decarburization-free surface
- the closely tolerated dimensions close to the finished size
- the smaller angular deviations, parallelism, flatness and roughness
Manufacturing
Sheets of various qualities and dimensions are used as starting material for the production of finely machined precision flat steel.
The liquid steel is cast into blocks and processed into blanks, the preliminary stage of sheet metal, via several intermediate stations. Blanks heated to the rolling temperature are rolled into sheets on rolling mills. Then, depending on the quality of the material, they are annealed.
The delivery condition of the raw material for precision flat steel is usually soft annealed for tool steels. So that the workpieces in further processing such. B. the heat treatment to assume a perfect and uniform hardness and so that the risk of cracks and warping is reduced during hardening, the rolled and annealed skin must be carefully removed together with the decarburized surface over the entire workpiece.
